Each dog breed has inherent diseases that can be passed on from one generation to the next. These diseases can be nearly eliminated by breeders having their breeding stock tested. If found to carry a genetic disease the dog would be spayed/neutered to prevent offspring from obtaining the diseases. Labrador Retrievers have in the past been associated with Hip Dysplasia. Most pet shops and backyard breeders are producing puppies only for the purpose of making money without testing the breeding stock first to be sure no genetic diseases will be passed on to the puppies. These genetic defects can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars in Veterinarian expenses, not to mention your personal heartache. The most common genetic problem with Labrador Retrievers is (CHD) Canine Hip Dysplasia. CHD is a developmental hereditary disease involving the hips of a dog resulting from failure of the head of the femur to fit tightly into the acetabulum (a ball and socket-like arrangement). Lameness, degenerative joint disease, arthritis and abnormal movement often result from the defect. The lameness may be intermittent or constant and tends to worsen with age. Here at Laurel Knob all of our breeding stock have been OFA certified. Whether you purchase your puppy from us or not be sure the sire and dam of your puppy have been OFA cleared. |
